Sandwiched between Cabra and Phibsboro villages, the main use of the area is a passage through. There are very few public destinations in the area. The public space of Great Western Square lacks benches or areas to slow down, stop and enjoy the space. The scheme proposes a recessed frontage coupled with an active growth buffer, softening the noise the street.

A decision was made to create a public plaza in the heart of the site, allowing moments of rest within these busy corridors. Pedestrian route-ways were created joining the North Circular Road with Cabra Road, allowing a more generous entrance to the newly installed light rail.

In the heart of the scheme, a micro-brewery dwells underneath the floating plaza, giving glimpses of itself to elevated positions. Holding onto the ideals of the life-line’s caretakers, the micro-brewery utilises artisan craft, local skill sets and natural ingredients. It comes from a rich tradition of brewing within Dublin city and part of a renewal of interest in the advantages of agricultural responsibility.

It is a low-lying, sunken structure to allow the parkland uninhibited views across the city. The school is split into zones: administration, hall, classrooms, and shared learning. The section is split to take advantage of the spatial thresholds and allow the children a sense of ownership in their learning environment.

The courtyard is surrounded by classrooms and overlooked by the staff room. It spills into the adjoining residences to form an enclosed common space. To facilitate the intentions of the original masterplan, in uniting a fractured and forgotten area of the city, the school’s modest scale aims to create a comfortable transition from park to city.

These influxes can create vacuums of community and saturate amenities.
In looking at Abbeyleix, this is fortunately not the case. The updated library is the hub of community activity; creating a core for the town to learn, exchange ideas, and meet.

To address the sustainable development of the future, material sources, labour and education will all play a part. The stewardship of our land is paramount in sustaining us.
Afforestation of deciduous species in the flat, nutrient rich soil will provide us with enhanced habitats, sources of local timber and an ecological learning ground for children and adults alike.

A carpentry and craft school would plug-in to the existing fabric and improve on the facilities of the adult education centre. With the ability to harvest, treat and season the timber, the small school can showcase the life-cycle of part of nature, nurturing children’s imagination while providing employment and training.
Pedestrian connections to the town enhance the permeability of the linear mainstreet and allow through foot-traffic. Vehicular traffic moves on the back roads, easing congestion .

The concept of this project came about after looking at the grain patterns and plot sizes of the existing fabric. The rhythm of Thomas Street is very apparent, even on first arrival. The area is soaked in rich history. To minimise the impact of a large, dense structure in the environs, the plot sizes were maintained to keep the rhythm of the street. Long bars over-sail a constant façade defining the structure with various areas of programme.

Large voids have been removed from the bars, creating spaces that allow for student interaction and rehearsal. The voids contain planting and small trees to create visual connections between the structures.

With the potential crisis of food, material and fuel shortages stemming from overpopulation, it seemed interesting to pose the challenge of increased density on an already compact city.

The polemical proposal is a series of urban lighthouses, offering guidance to the lost traveller by colour coded beacon throughout the districts. Taking advantage of the current datum, one can access the upper levels of the light houses for viewing platforms. Thirdly, and most importantly, the towers act as circulation to a new, upper level of the city. A series of platforms have been created above the existing architecture, occupying the same plots, allowing for the preservation of history.

So, to start both a yearly travel log for each class to document their annual travels, and a yearbook documenting the success and field of study of each years work was both challenging and rewarding. I worked on both of these projects during my 4th year studying architecture, becoming Head Editor of the Yearbook. This 188 page book also extended in to my thesis year, printing in the first semester. This work has been continued and is allowing a continious record of the school's train of thought.

This project was nominated for both the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) President Medal, and the Architectural Association of Ireland's (AAI) Maurice Craig Award.

To investigate and assess the overlap among pieces of critical infrastructure, one must explore the nature of both the physical and digital infrastructures, and most importantly, the physicality of digital infrastructures. This project hosts a data centre, and a computation research laboratory. Datacentres are the physical warehouses of the digital world. They consume vast quantities of power and demand high levels of servicing infrastructure and redundancy systems.

On a global scale it is a node that plugs into a vast matrix of seemingly limitless connections. On a local scale it is a monumental facility, dominating the sparse skyline of the boggy Irish Midlands. To boost the country’s output for quality technological research, a fully capable facility is a necessary starting point.

The site plays a crucial role in the realisation of the idea. The bog itself is an industrialised landscape, with its own spectrum of infrastructure to harvest the peat. As there are many bogs throughout the Midlands, a series of optimum conditions were laid out to select the most appropriate location. The parameters included proximity to rail networks, motorway, fibre optic networks, urban centres, sufficient area for replicable building type, and ease of water retention.

The crucial intersection of the above criteria allowed the selection process to be narrowed to the Cúil na Móna Bog, west of Portlaoise, Ireland. This junction is not only part of the physical infrastructure, but helps create the node for a digital infrastructure, highlighting the complex matrix of systems that are overlaid on the landscape.

Recent digital technology has created a huge physical footprint even though our experience of it is entirely virtual. As a result, the physical remnants tend to be obscured from normal experience, both because of their size and because of security concerns. By incorporating these digital behemoths into a more active role in society, they can become highly utilised and versatile pieces of civic equipment.
